A
solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes in front
of the Sun, blocking its light.
On 29th March, 2006 a total eclipse of the sun will
be visible across parts of Africa, Egypt, Turkey and Asia
Minor. In Egypt you will witness the eclipse in one of the most archaeologically
and culturally rich areas in the world. What an experience of a lifetime!

Most eclipse expeditions to Egypt will head toward
the Libyan border near the town of Salloum. Salloum lies 213 km west
of Marsa Matruh on an excellent 4-lane divided
coastal highway that permits speeds of 100 km/h.
On the way to El Alamein there is a
continuous strip of seaside apartments lining the
Mediterranean North Coast in Alexandria- summer get-aways for
thousands of Egyptians who want to escape the heat
of Cairo and other inland cities. In March they will
be largely unoccupied. Construction is still going
on as the vacation strip expands westward from El
Alamein.
El Alamein is the site of a large Commonwealth
cemetery, very well kept, and a marvelous series of
museums. Which is a must-see stop along the way,
either coming or going.
Coming from the east, Salloum is a beautiful
location. Small white buildings lying on the
bottom of a marvelously blue Mediterranean bay.
Salloum itself has another Commonwealth cemetery
that is worth a visit. The inscriptions are from the
families of the dead soldiers and not from a
military committee.
