Egypt is located at the crossroads of three continents, Europe, Asia and Africa and has a wide range of habitats each with its own unique bird life. Egypt is located on major migration routes and millions of birds pass through every autumn and spring. Egyptian wetlands are important wintering sites for water birds.

The Ancient Egyptians were excellent natural historians and vividly documented the flora and fauna of their time on the walls of their tombs and temples. Over 76 different species of birds, can be identified from the wall paintings, relics and other artifacts.

You can witness may species of birds in Egypt throughout  all 4 seasons:

WINTER

During winter Egyptian wetlands are full with water birds; however, some resident specialties, such as Painted Snipe and Senegal Coucal can be difficult to find. Migrants pass through the country from mid February, including storks and raptors. The can be warm to cold depending upon where you are in the country.

AUTUMN

Large numbers and a large diversity of species migrate through Egypt in the autumn, with different species occurring at different times. Water bird migration continues at Zaranik until the end of September. White Storks pass through the southern Gulf of Suez until the end of September along with Honey Buzzards and Levant Sparrow hawks. South Sinai is filled with passerine and near passerine migrants from early September well into October. Raptor migration occurs in Mid September at Suez and continues until early November. Red Sea summer breeding visitors are still around until early October. Mid October and November are good times to find interesting vagrants. In autumn Abu Simbel specialties are not guaranteed and some resident specialties can be difficult to see. The weather is hot in September and gradually decreases in temperature as the autumn progresses becoming cooler in November.

SUMMER

Even though the weather is very hot, it is a good time to see resident species and summer visitors, especially specialties in the Red Sea and at Abu Simbel. Early August water bird migration begins at Zaranik in North Sinai and White Stork migration starts in the southern Gulf of Suez.

SPRING

Spring migration is the best time to see the greatest diversity and numbers of species. During this season you can observe resident specialties when they are singing and displaying. Peak migration is from mid March to the end of April. This is the best time to see stork and raptor migration along the Red Sea. At the end of April and by the beginning of May, migration is still in progress, and most of the Red Sea and Abu Simbel specialties have arrived in Egypt. The weather is cool in March and becomes warmer into May.
